Description

Splash is a weekend-long series of lectures, workshops and seminars for students in grades 7-12. Students can start with a short introduction to a number of subjects, take an in-depth seminar or intensive workshop or both. They offer classes on mathematics, hobbies, science, philosophy, computer science, and many other topics. Students can take up to sixteen hours of classes for a one-time registration fee for each student. Courses are taught by MIT students and other local college students and professionals. Splash runs on the weekend before Thanksgiving, in November.

Another great thing about the SPLASH Program at MIT is that they do not discriminate against younger students. If the parent feels that the child is capable of learning the information, they will not refuse the child a spot based on their grade or age.

Overall, Splash was a resounding success for my daughter. She attended 7 classes: Architecture in Boston, Neurology, Astronomy and Astrophysics, God and Science, Writing Poetry, Midi and Creating Music on a PC, and Surfing Smart on the Internet. With the exception of one class, my daughter enjoyed the information covered and the MIT undergrads who taught the classes. Class subject matter and quality vary from year to year depending upon the classes that the MIT undergrad volunteers decide to offer. MIT does solicit feedback from attendees by sending out comment/class evaluation cards afterwards. Other parents I spoke with at Splash found their kids enjoyed attending and plan to return next year. BTW, it's a nice chance for parents of PG kids to spend some time together, too!

A lot of bang for the buck! The fee for this weekend of seminars is around $30. The subject range is so broad that there is bound to be something to suit every academically minded youngster.
