This book is one of the few studies available about the socialization of homeschooled students. It is unusual in that it focuses only on girls, and is a qualitative research study. Families of profoundly gifted children will find this book particularly interesting, as several of the girls who are quoted extensively are highly to profoundly gifted (although not formally identified in the text as such). Sheffer's findings that homeschooled adolescent girls retain their confidence while conventionally schooled girls appear to lose confidence in the teenage years call into question some of Gilligan's findings about girls' development. Homeschooling families of profoundly gifted children of both genders will find this book fascinating to read, hopeful in its conclusions, and thought-provoking.
