In our experience, this has been an excellent program. Great for team building, making friends, learning Improv, engineering, artwork and a generally fun time. We've had several years where this was the ONLY thing my son enjoyed that was "school".

Destination Imagination (DI) is the non-profit clone of Odyssey of the Mind, which became a commercial venture. The focus is on improvisation, teamwork, and problem solving. As a former DI coach, I can say that it is great for helping children learn to think on their feet and to work in groups. For highly introverted, PG children DI is challenging because it demands that they perform in public. Another negative for some PG children is that the main "problem" solved during the year does not usually involve intense study or continual learning (e.g., build a balsa wood structure that will hold 500 pounds and write a skit) and it is not really connected to real-life problems, like the public service projects in Future Problem Solvers. On the plus side, DI does provide a great outlet for learning teamwork and can provide many hours of social interaction. Near the end of the contest year, DI can absorb 10 or more hours per week.

This international creative problem solving organization provides gifted children around the world an opportunity to develop their own special talents while also expanding critical thinking, problem solving, and team working skills. The children who participate in this program are at a greater advantage than other children for a successful future. The program is also heavily supported by parents and community so in the states where funding is an issue this is a perfect fit to fill the gap in the educational needs of our gifted children. Here in South Carolina it requires very little time from the teacher (who is already overwhelmed with requirements). This is the world's largest creative problem solving organization and is totally not for profit and run mainly by volunteers. All of the efforts are to benefit the children.
