Description

"Explore the role of the engineer in the 21st Century while gaining hands on experience using state of the art technology. You will work with your peers and develop math and science skills to work on problems on the forefront of engineering. You will learn how the computer has affected all aspects of engineering practice and use modern software tools to investigate interesting problems. As a Junior Engineer, you will have access to the Computer Aided Design laboratory with thirty computer workstations, each of which is loaded with the latest versions of software packages used by industry. State-of-the-art laboratories include advanced water jet technologies for manufacturing and laser-optics facilities for measuring the properties of biomaterials. Participate in daily projects designed to highlight current trends in engineering. You will work with UMBC faculty and students in daily activities that include: designing a wind powered vehicle; using computer software to design an engineering component and operating a computer-controlled water jet to manufacture the component; using your math skills to obtain the properties of biomaterials from measurements made using modern optics; and programming a robot to complete a specific task."

This sounds like a fantastic opportunity for students who are interested in engineering. The students will have access to technology that would normally not be available to students and will conduct research and projects right along with the professional engineers.
