At C.W. Post CGY, I take four classes a day. In Chemistry, we do experiments that we rarely ever do at school, and we get to use real chemicals. In Advanced Rocketry, we build rockets and gliders and learn about aerodynamics and physics. In Electronics, we're making circuits, learning about, current, resistance, magnetism. In Advanced Playwriting, we're reading plays and writing our own. Much more interesting than regular school.

At the time our child attended this camp, she was entering 6th grade, having been accelerated one year in public school. We registered her for sessions with children entering 6th to 8th grades i.e. with children 3 to 4 years older than her. Our child experienced culture-shock for several reasons: she had never had to work or pay attention in public school, she wasn't passionate about any of her subjects, and she lacked the maturity of the older gifted kids. We thought the material was excellent, but were disappointed that our child didn't get more out of it for the reasons above.

At the end of the camp, parents were invited to spend a day in the classes their children were taking. As the parent of a gifted girl, I paid particular attention to teachers' interactions with the girls. I noticed that in my child's Chemistry class, the teacher had almost no interaction with the few girls. The girls, by the way, had positioned themselves at the back and sat very passively for most of the session. The teacher, who was male, addressed almost all of his questions to the boys and called on them almost exclusively. Gender bias exists even in the gifted setting!

As the parent of a Young Scholar, I have found this program to be useful in satisfying Zachary's curiosity in a number of areas. He has loved the math, science and poetry classes. The Saturday morning program has provided Zachary with opportunities to enhance his educational experience, which our school district has been unable to provide.

My son began the Saturday morning program this year. He was in kindergarten and he really enjoyed it and looked forward to Saturdays. I think the teachers were very good and the subjects were highly enriching. My son is very excited to go again this fall.
