Description

Summer Suzuki Institutes are special camps that provide an intensive musical experience for families with children who currently study an instrument through the Suzuki Method. Institutes are located in all regions of the U.S. and Canada, offering activities for students, parents and teachers in one-week sessions throughout the summer. The Suzuki Summer Institutes provide a unique opportunity for families to focus on music outside the usual constraints of daily life. Suzuki Summer Institute offerings include master classes, group classes and recitals as well as enrichment courses that range from theory, improvisation and chamber music to choir, drama and fiddling. Parents attend classes with their children. Many institutes also offer lectures and discussion groups for parents, special activities for siblings, and social events such as picnics and family fun nights.

My daughter and I attended the Institut Suzuki Montréal in the summer of 1998 and again in 1999. We liked it so much we hope to go back this summer. We found it was a wonderfully intense music immersion kind of experience. It's hard to describe, really. If you stay in the dorms you hear kids practicing early in the morning before classes and late at night before collapsing for the day. The level of playing is inspiring. Recitals mix beginners, intermediate and advanced players so the younger kids get to hear what's possible with continued practice. Everyday they have master classes and group lessons, different levels of orchestras and workshops for fiddling and jazz, too. It's also fun to be in a city where people are speaking French and English. Classes are taught in both languages. Teachers can usually handle both languages pretty well but if they get stuck trying to find the right words there are parents in all the classes to help out.
