Description

COSMOS is a four week intensive science and mathematics enrichment program. Each student chooses one 4-week core course and two 2-week supplemental courses along with a science writing course. Courses offered at COSMOS are designed to introduce students to subjects that are typically not offered in high school, such as, automotive engineering, optical science, and number theory. On a typical day, students attend courses, participate in labs or course-related field trips and attend their selected courses. COSMOS is available on the following University of California campuses: Davis, Irvine, and Santa Cruz.

Selection is competitive. Students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement in science and mathematics and are completing grades eight through twelve from all California public and private schools, are eligible to apply. Admission is based upon standardized test scores, grade point average, achievement in science projects and/or competitions, teacher recommendations, motivation, and community service. Each year, a limited number of students from outside California may be admitted. Prerequisites may be required to ensure success in the course offerings. Parents are encouraged to discuss with their child his or her maturity and readiness to participate in a month-long residential program on a public research university campus.

My daughter went to UCSD for the cosmos program last summer in biogenetics. She loved it! The dorm life, supervision and bonding with other kids in science and math meant the world to her. She was over the moon. The program had everything, rapid propagation of DNA, cloning, lab techniques, great guest lecturers in all kinds of topics like dark matter and chaos theory. At the same time, they went to the beach, did their own laundry, and had a talent show. Its an incredible program and Moriah definitely loved the UCSD campus. Would do it again in a heartbeat!
