Description

This volume includes short biographies and information about the styles and techniques of more than 75 famous artists, from the Dark Ages up to the present day (Ghiberti to Christo and Wyeth). For each artist, an accompanying studio art project suitable for K-6 children is included, designed to focus on the media, design elements, style or type of art, or subject most associated with each individual artist. Materials needed for all projects are specified, along with directions and a sample of a child's work.

By any account, this is an excellent book. It makes accessible to even very young children both information about famous artists, and studio experiences related to that artist's work. It is the one book I wish had been available when I was completing my certification as an art teacher. This book is especially useful for profoundly gifted children with a deep interest in the history of art, and also for those who are visual-spatial learners. There are enough projects in the book to last more than a year. Parents or teachers will need to supplement this book with inexpensive colored art prints purchased from an art museum or a company such as Dover Publishing, or through images found on art museum sites on the Internet.
