Kid's Discover Magazine is a great resource. Each full color magazine covers a different topic in depth and concludes with several activities and a resource list for further information. Althought I originally began using this magazine when I was teaching, I have continued my subscription as I personally find the information quite interesting.

I like these issues, although I don't know that a subscription would be worth the money. Check your library to see if it carries this magazine. If it doesn't, you can request the library to carry a subscription.

We have been long time subscribers, although my 9 year old outgrew them long ago. She continues to enjoy them as a jumping off point for further exploration. There is not much text, but the photographs are gorgeous, and a sense of humor adds to the appeal for my child. I agree that they are a little pricey, but we use them repeatedly, which makes the cost seem worthwhile.
