The Writing Tutorials and Math Tutorials offered through the distance learning program at Johns Hopkins' Center for Talented Youth began almost as soon as the talent searches did, nearly 25 years ago. Within the past four years, these courses have been augmented greatly by the burgeoning internet access available to families. Students qualify for these tutorials if, before the age of 13, they receive a score on the SAT-Math or SAT-Verbal test equal to or greater than that of the average high school junior or senior. Thus, these courses are designed specifically for highly, exceptionally, and profoundly gifted students. The courses are used by families of profoundly gifted students in many ways -- as enrichment, as acceleration (either in a conventional school program or in a homeschool), or to replace an inappropriate school course with an appropriate one, in a conventional school setting.

EPGY is expensive and you can take as long as you like using it, but the billing gives the parents incentive to keep their children focused. We have found having the tutor support works well for us. It has definitely assisted our YS with completing the assignments.

We've used EPGY 1st to 6th grade math, both as at-home enrichment, and in the school, in lieu of classroom math. We've also used Academic Systems Pre-Algebra, and are continuing with Algebra I. We've supplemented with Destination Math first two levels, and will continue with the Algebra I level this year. Throughout our experience, Johns Hopkins has been very supportive, both with tutor and administrative issues. The EPGY software is less 'flashy' but very comprehensive; the Academic Systems software is a bit updated, and offers teachers and parents a more chapter-by-chapter, pre-test to post-test approach. The Destination Math courses are excellent, fun, graphic based problem solving softwares to compliment the subjects covered in the EPGY / Academic Systems software. They offer an interesting reinforcement for the topics, in a completely problem-solving format. And, as an aside, they add a little space between classes to 'slow down' my math whiz so that she has a chance to digest the math that she blasts through! The combination of software sources (EPGY, Academic Systems, and Destination Math) offers the student a well-rounded math education, with the latest technology available in each course area. Note: this resource works very well for us, but... we have heard of PG students that have not been comfortable / successful with the computer and tutor based format. Learning styles must also be considered.

The math program was an excellent solution to my son's public schooling experience. Although he had been accelerated in school, he was still completely bored with the repetitiveness of "classroom learning" math. His public school brought the Johns Hopkins program into his classroom for him, and he was able to proceed through 2 grade levels in 3 months! He was able to move at his own rate, and he actually learned some new math in the process.

JHU CTY's Writing Tutorials Level 1 was an excellent introduction to the process of writing a fictional story, a fact-based story and a poem. The steps of idea generation, narrowing down the topic, pre-writing, rough and final drafts were covered, each with excellent tutor comments and suggestions. The bi-weekly telephone call helped connect my daughter to her tutor. Although writing is still not her favorite thing, my daughter is certainly doing a better job at organizing her writing and getting her thoughts down on paper. I think this course is what should have been taught through the later elementary school language arts program in our district, but was not. Although we will not proceed to Level 2 at this time (there are 7 distinct levels of Writing Tutorials) due to her other commitments, I would recommend Level 1 for students who need positive feedback and discipline for their writing process. I believe that this course is appropriate both for those PG students who 'hate to write' and those who like to write but need some refinement in their writing process.
