Description

This online curriculum website is offered by the Californis Department of Education. The SCORE Literature Cyberguides were designed as part of a California-wide effort to create model supplemental and enrichment materials based on California's state standards in reading and language arts. The units are available in four levels: K-3, 4-5, 6-8, and 9-12; a few units are also available in Spanish. Each unit clearly delineates the standards covered by the unit; specifies materials needed; and provides step-by-step instructions for the unit activities, including accompanying websites (some with primary source materials). The units include both modern and classic literature; almost 200 units are currently available.

Rating:
These guides are great because they give the user some idea of various activities and Internet links to go along with a particular book. The guides can easily be adapted to a particular student's needs, so they can be quite useful for PG children. Some of the guides bring in multiple subjects, such as language arts and history.

Although these Cyberguides were designed for heterogeneous, general education classrooms, they may be successfully used by profoundly gifted children in either a homeschool or a traditional school setting by using literature designed for higher grade levels than the grade level at which the child is placed by age, and perhaps adapting or extending certain assignments. These guides would be particularly useful to first time homeschooling families who feel they need more direct guidance; and to schools and teachers who need access to challenging, high quality, but free literature guides that can be used to challenge profoundly gifted children in the regular classroom. One warning: The guides do not seem to be completely even in quality; some units are much more extensive and better written than others.
