Description

This series of ten books by author L. Snicket is for ages 9-12. These books tell an unhappy tale about three very unlucky children. Even though the Baudelaire siblings are charming and clever, they lead lives filled with misery and woe. From the very first page of the book in the series when the children are at the beach and receive terrible news, continuing on through the entire story, disaster lurks at their heels. One might say they are magnets for misfortune.

These books are delightful, funny, linguistically playful and lots of fun! My Young Scholar loves them. There is no question that young readers will want to continue to read about the unlucky adventures of the Baudelaire children after reading the first book. The audience that they were written for will truly enjoy them.

I love these books. I like how they all have different characters and plots, but are all related. Book nine is my favorite - it has a great description of a carnival that I love.

I would give this series a rating of four out of five stars. Don't get me wrong, the books are good, but they aren't my favorites. You ask why. I'll start with the good stuff. There are some funny parts in the books, and there are times when the Baudelaire children are happy, or feel like they have a chance. However, these times are short-lived, while the bad times last for a lot longer. These are times when everything hits the rock-solid bottom, and nothing looks up. These bad times are much, much more numerous than the good times. I think the author could have added a bit more happiness to the children's lives, even while they lived mostly in misery. Oh - one more thing. I do believe that things will get better in the end, but I still would like to see more good times. I'm not saying that the books should be filled with happiness, I'm saying that there should be a little more sunlight in a world of darkness. All right, I've talked long enough. Go out and read the books!

These books are well written, and the story is good. Even though nothing good ever happens to the Baudelaire children, you find yourself waiting for the next book so you can find out what will happen, until the last book in which, hopefully, they'll finally have a happy ending. Recommended.

This is a great series of books; I have read all 10 that are currently published. It is fun to see what disaster Lemony Snicket is going to subject the children to next -- and to see how they will get out of it. Adventure books are my favorite kind of book, and these are like adventures. The author is also good at characterization, particularly of the villains. Great books to get!

I love and have all 10 books. They are all good books but my favorite one is The Ersatz Elevator because the elevator shaft is so deep.
